Things Fall Apart By Chinua Achebe - 1253 Words

Throughout the late 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century, most of Africa faced a number of invasions from the British. Their culture and traditions were altered to meet the goals of Britain. Chinua Achebe’s book, Things Fall Apart, is set in a Nigerian town where the British government had taken over. The main character, Okonkwo, is followed as the story progresses and shows how the new leaders were constantly battling against the indigenous people of the village. The book maps out the change from colonialism to imperialism in Africa during this time period. Although not all of the transitioning was through brute force and exiling, the Africans still had little to no free will in what happened. The Europeans began to do whatever they wanted because they were stronger militarily and by the early 1900’s, most of Africa had been col onized . It was not long until the colonized areas began to show signs of imperialism. The British were in charge and oversaw everything that went on in the countries and although their main interests were for commercial and humanitarian reasons the outcomes did not reflect it. There were extreme diplomatic pressures and military force that turned aggressive in the late 1800’s when slavery was abolished. Britain took part in the slave trade in order to gain access to the country and its offerings so when slavery was now against the law, they did not have as much control. Village customs, stories, and traditions were lost because the British sought to put people where they wanted and combined numerous tribes into one. Wars broke out between African tribes because they were forced to work alongside each other as well as share their languages. In Things Fall Apart, the narrator says, â€Å"And at last the locusts did descend. They settled on every tree on every blade of grass, they settled on the roofs and covered the bare ground. Arts Of The Contact Zone Essay Summary There are many reminisces that are affiliated with a contact zone, and many ways to implement these principles into an assignment for students. One of these principles is called parody, which is a humorously exaggerated imitation off writer (http:// en. Wisped. Org/wick/Parody), When look at parody think about someone listening to what you have written and instead tot critiquing you they just poke fun at you by imitating you in a playful way. This could be by imitating what you said in a funny voice, or switching some words around that you have written in order to make the statement funny, they could do this if what you have written goes not make sense. The reason they would probably do this, is that way you would not be offended by another persons critique, and they can keep the mood happy by just poking a little fun. In order to teach my students about some of the principles of the contact zone, would physically use one of the principles in an assignment, in which they would have to use that principle. In this assignment we Pupil be looking at using parody. First, would ask each student vat they think parody is, after teaching them the definition, I would assign them a partner. The student and his partner would then each write a one page Story as fast as they an, about anything they want. Once the student does this, would have him present his Story to his or her partner and see how they respond. Most students who are comfortable with their classmates would probably poke fun on a few things that happened in their partners story, just because they are friends. This would be an example of parody that they are showing towards their partner. After that is done, I would then have a one page story that I had written, and present that to the class. After finish reading my story would then ask if there was anything wrong with it. In most cases, most students would not imitate me n any way with writing, because would be more intimidating to them. Also, they probably would not feel comfortable showing a parody towards my work, because I would be older, more experienced, and they would not know me as well as they know their friends. The intended purpose of this assignment for the students is to teach them a principle of the contact zone. Instead of just defining what parody is, would actually allow them to experience it, without them even knowing they experienced it. Of course, would explain to them how they, were using parody when It came to their friends work. But, even it came to their Peers work they were not as eager to poke fun at my work. This would allow them to get a complete grasp, and almost a hands on feel of what parody actually is. Each students work would be evaluated by me seeing if they have all Mitten a story that is at least one page, and if they listened and paid attention to their partners Story. The assignment would basically be a completion grade, because would just be trying to get them to understand what parody is a little more. Some students may not actually use parody after hearing their partners story, some might use a different principle. Some may even say it was simply a good story, but for those who did use parody to talk about their partners story, I would explain to them that they did. Loud also explain to the class as a whole that they used parody, and show the class as a whole after the assignment what parody actually is. This assignment would prepare students for an upcoming assignment that is taking place later on in the year, The assignment that is going to he presented later on in the year will be listening to a bunch of assignment reviews online, and determining if there was any parody involved or not. For instance a student will listen to another persons review on a writer, and if there was parody they will explain where the parody was in the review. AP a critical analysis EssayIt also, would low them to experience how the other students deal with them being in a contact zone. There is always some sort of difference in culture, or personality that we have to deal with, and it is only growing. Also, the second half Of the quote means that back in the day, When we did not understand some of these principles, or the contact zone at all, we would just simply ignore them. However, in this day and age we are aware Of What some of these principles are, and we can learn to work with other people, and view their points as well as ours. One thing that could happen is when there is a difference in culture, or a difference on a viewpoint. Stead of arguing about it each person could listen to each others ideas and possibly find a way to combine both ideas, or at least understand where the other person is coming from. During these sixteen years, he accomplished many great achievements, and brought in many important political changes to improve the health and living conditions of people all over the country. What exactly did Tommy Douglas accomplish that made him so great? Tommy Douglas was born in Falkirk, Scotland, on October 12, 1904. In 1910, his family immigrated to Winnipeg, Canada. When the first World War struck, the Douglas family moved back temporarily to Glascow. There, he worked at a whiskey factory until the War ended. He then moved back to Winnipeg, where he worked as an apprentice printer at the Winnipeg Free Press and Grain Trade News. There, he learned first hand the needs and views of the common citizen. By 19, he had successfully earned his Journeymans as a printer. By then, however, he had earned a good reputation as a Baptist Preacher. There he met JS Woodsworth, a Methodist Preacher and political party CCF leader. He finished his schooling at McMaster University, earning an MA. In 1934, Tommy Douglas began his political career. He ran unsuccessfully for provincial candidate of the Farmer-Labour party of Saskatchewan. The next year, he won as the CCF candidate for the federal constituency of Weyburn. By 1941, he was selected as the provincial leader of the Saskatchewan Provincial party in George Williams absence, who hd gone overseas to follow the war. He later resigned his federal position to lead the Saskatchewan CCF, and won the election with 47 seats of 53. During his five terms as premier, Douglas introduced many reforms, mostly geared towards public hospitals and medical care. These reforms moved Saskatchewan to a more forward and prosperous state. In his first year alone, he introduced 72 bills that were aimed at social or economic changes. After only two years, he had reduced provincial deficit by $20 million. Some of Tommy Douglas's greatest accomplishments were pensioner benefits and universal hospitilization. In 1944, he introduced pensioners to free medical, dental, and hospital services, as well as free treatment of cancer, mental illness, tuberculosis, and venereal diseases. During his campaining for the Humanity First, 70% of the CCF budget went into health, welfare, and education. In 1947, universal hospitilation was introduced. For five dollars per annum per person, the cost of medical treatment for the sick was spread to the entire population. As the province's finances became more stable, within 12 year he announced the medicare plan. The medicare plan was an upgrade of the previous universal hospilitation program. Tommy Douglas also brought in many other non-health related changes. For example, his Crown Corporation Act allowed provincial air and bus lines. The Timber borad allowed the preservation of precious lumber resources. Also, SaskTel, or Saskatchewan Telephone, gave che ap, high quality telephone access to mos tof the people in the country. Douglas' CCF then introduced the Trade Union Act, requiring collective bargaining to be mandatory and extending the rights of civil servants. Worker's compensation, mandatory minimum wages, and paid holidays were set. In a mere four years, union membership rose 118 percent. To show the commiutment Douglas' government had to it's constituents, each CCF cabinet member took a 28% pay cut to pay for any new departments created. At the right side of the collage in the top corner you see a woman that says Walt a minute That Is not right. This woman Is representing millions of the Hungarian that died because they did not have the sources of defenses that Stalins government had. There Is a clock next to her which Just represents the little time that the Hungarian people thought they had freedom from Stalins rule and how little did the is impacted by the image and decide to figure out what it symbolizes. Exactly how cold a substance has to be to be considered cryogenic is a matter of some debate by the scientific community. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) considers cryogenics to include temperatures below  Ã¢Ë†â€™180  °C (93.15 K; −292.00  °F), which is a temperature above which common refrigerants (e.g., hydrogen sulfide, freon) are gases and below which permanent gases (e.g., air, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, hydrogen, helium) are liquids.
